Product Overview

What It Is

The Tempilstik is the original temperature-indicating crayon — a stick calibrated to melt at one precise temperature. Streak it across a heated surface: below the rating the mark stays dry and chalky; the moment the surface reaches the rated temperature the mark melts into a clear liquid smear. This gives an instant, calibration-free, ±1% NIST-traceable confirmation that the target temperature has been reached. Trusted on the most critical jobs for over 80 years.

Who Uses It

Welders, welding inspectors (CSWIP/AWS-CWI), QA/QC engineers, and heat-treatment technicians on structural, pipeline, pressure vessel and fabrication projects across the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman. Mandatory on any weld with a specified preheat or interpass temperature in the WPS.

Where It Is Used

Weld preheat verification before striking an arc, interpass temperature control between weld passes, and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) monitoring — across oil & gas, pipeline, petrochemical, structural steel, shipbuilding and power projects throughout the GCC. Also for bearing fitting, curing, drying, and any process needing surface temperature confirmation.

📋 Code Compliance — Why Inspectors Insist on Tempilstik

Welding codes mandate a minimum preheat and maximum interpass temperature to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking and control weld metallurgy. Tempilstik complies with the preheat temperature requirements of AWS D1.1, ASME Code Sec. I, III and VIII, and ANSI/ASME B31.1 and B31.3. The part number, temperature and lot code are imprinted across the entire stick for full inspection traceability — and the crayons are free of sulphur, lead and halogen, so they are safe on stainless steel and nickel alloys.

How to Use a Tempilstik

1

Select the Right Temperature

Choose the Tempilstik rated at your required preheat or interpass temperature (per your WPS). Each stick is a single fixed temperature.

2

Mark the Surface

As the surface heats, streak the crayon on the metal near (but not in) the weld zone. Below the rated temperature the mark is dry and chalky.

3

Watch for the Melt

The instant the surface reaches the stick's rated temperature, the mark melts into a distinct liquid smear — your visual "go" signal that temperature is reached.

4

Verify & Weld

Confirm melt across the required area, then proceed with welding. For interpass control, check between passes that the surface has NOT exceeded the maximum interpass stick.

Temperature Range & Common Ratings

Common Preheat / Interpass Temperature Ratings (Full Range 100–650°F)

°F °C (approx.) Typical Application
100°F 38°C Low-temp drying / minimum preheat
150°F 66°C Light preheat, thin section
175°F 79°C Common minimum preheat
200°F 93°C Standard structural preheat
250°F 121°C Preheat — medium section
300°F 149°C Preheat — heavy section / higher CE steel
350°F 177°C Preheat — thick / high-strength steel
400°F 204°C Preheat / interpass control
450°F 232°C Interpass max control
500°F 260°C Interpass / high-preheat alloy
550°F 288°C High preheat / PWHT approach
600°F 316°C Interpass max / heat treatment
650°F 343°C Upper standard range / PWHT

Additional temperatures below 100°F and above 650°F are available. Confirm the exact rating required by your WPS. Contact us with your temperatures and we'll supply the matching sticks.

Key Features & Benefits

🎯

±1% NIST-Traceable Accuracy

Precise, calibration-free temperature indication with 100% reliability — no meters to calibrate, no batteries, no drift. The melt point is the measurement. Trusted by inspectors as objective evidence of temperature compliance.

📋

Code Compliant & Traceable

Meets AWS D1.1, ASME Sec. I/III/VIII, and ANSI/ASME B31.1/B31.3 preheat requirements. Part number, temperature and lot code imprinted across the entire stick — full traceability for QA/QC documentation and audits.

Instant Visual Result

The mark melts the moment the surface hits the rated temperature — an immediate, unambiguous go/no-go signal. No waiting, no interpretation. Faster and cheaper than contact thermometers for spot checks.

🧪

Sulphur, Lead & Halogen Free

Free of contaminants that cause cracking or corrosion in stainless steel and nickel alloys — safe to use directly near the weld zone on corrosion-resistant alloys and critical service pipework.

Slip-Resistant Aluminium Holder

The crayon is supplied in a slip-resistant aluminium holder for safe, controlled handling near hot surfaces — advancing the stick as it wears, like a mechanical pencil.

🔧

Works on Almost Any Surface

Usable on steel, iron, aluminium, stainless steel, glass, plastic and ceramic — one tool across welding, bearing fitting, curing, drying and general surface temperature checks in any industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tempilstik and how does it work?
A Tempilstik is a temperature-indicating crayon calibrated to a single precise temperature. You mark the surface as it heats — below the rated temperature the mark stays dry and chalky; the instant the surface reaches the stick's rated temperature the mark melts into a distinct liquid smear. This gives an immediate, calibration-free confirmation that the target temperature has been reached, accurate to ±1% NIST-traceable.
Why are Tempilstiks used in welding preheat and interpass control?
Welding codes require a minimum preheat and a maximum interpass temperature to prevent hydrogen cracking and control weld metallurgy. Tempilstik lets the welder confirm the metal reached the required preheat before striking an arc, and stays below the maximum interpass between passes. It complies with AWS D1.1, ASME Sec. I/III/VIII and ANSI/ASME B31.1/B31.3 — the standard tool for code-compliant welding across oil & gas, structural and pressure vessel work.
What temperature range and accuracy do Tempilstiks offer?
Standard range is 100°F to 650°F (38°C to 343°C), with higher and lower ratings available. Accuracy is ±1%, NIST-traceable — calibration-free with 100% reliability. Part number, temperature and lot code are imprinted across the entire stick for traceability, and the crayons are free of sulphur, lead and halogen contaminants.
What surfaces can Tempilstik be used on?
Steel, iron, aluminium, stainless steel, glass, plastic and ceramic. It ships in a slip-resistant aluminium holder for safe handling near hot work. Being free of sulphur, lead and halogens, it is safe on stainless steel and nickel alloys where these contaminants must be avoided.
How can I get pricing in UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Oman?
Global Hardware & Tools LLC supplies the full range of Markal Tempilstik temperature-indicating crayons across UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Qatar (Doha), Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Dammam, Jubail), Kuwait, Oman (Muscat) and Iraq.
