Dynaweld Water Soluble Purging Paper & Tape is a complete purge dam system for TIG (GTAW) welding of stainless steel and aluminium pipe. The paper forms a temporary gas-tight dam inside the pipe that holds argon or helium in the weld zone, giving clean, oxide-free root welds with far less purge gas. After welding, the paper and tape dissolve completely in water or steam during hydro-test, leaving zero residue.

SGS Testing & Compliance
- Water soluble paper (Model SWPA): SGS Reports SHAEC25009689701 & SHAEC25009689703. EU RoHS (EU) 2015/863 pass (lead, mercury, cadmium, Cr(VI), PBB, PBDE, phthalates); halogen (F, Br, I) and sulphur not detected.
- Water soluble tape (Model SAIWEI SWT): SGS Report SHAEC25012287303. Halogen (F, Br, I) and sulphur not detected; chlorine 170 mg/kg, within limits per EN 14582:2016.
- Composition: sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and wood pulp. Biodegradable and accepted in nuclear, petrochemical, food & beverage and pharmaceutical work.
How to Build a Purge Dam
- Trace: press the paper against the pipe's inner edge to mark the inner diameter, then fold to 90°.
- Cut: cut a circle about one-third larger than the pipe diameter to allow a folded flange.
- Slit: cut 1"–2" slits toward the impression at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock and around the circle.
- Position and tape: set the dam at the recommended distance and seal the full circumference with water soluble tape.
- Activate: dab the tape with a damp sponge to reactivate the adhesive, then let it dry for a gas-tight seal.
- Repeat: build a second dam on the other side of the joint to close the purge chamber.
- Purge: insert the purge needle into the root gap and introduce argon or helium; monitor oxygen if possible.
- Weld: carry out the TIG weld.
- Dissolve: flush with water or steam during hydro-test; paper and tape dissolve with no residue.
Key Features
- Effective gas barrier: low air permeability keeps argon and helium at the root, so far less gas is needed than with remote purging 10–20 ft away.
- Fully dissolvable: dissolves in hot or cold water and steam, faster at higher temperatures. Dissolves in ethylene or propylene glycol solutions up to 20% concentration. It does not dissolve in oil, fuel, MEK, acetone or other solvents.
- Repositionable tape: controlled-tack adhesive can be repositioned before dampening for the final seal.
- Range for any bore: ASW-35, ASW-40C and ASW-60 grades with rolls up to 31" wide, from small-bore tubing to large mainline pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why use water soluble purging paper for TIG welding?
Two paper dams on either side of the joint form a sealed chamber that is filled with argon or helium. This prevents oxidation and sugaring inside the weld, and it uses much less gas than purging the whole pipe. After hydro-test the paper dissolves and leaves nothing behind.
Does it dissolve in cold water?
Yes. It dissolves in hot and cold water, and faster in hot water or steam. It will not dissolve in oil, fuel or solvents.
Which grade should I use?
ASW-35 (0.088 mm) is the general-purpose grade. ASW-40C (0.102 mm) comes as a 20-1/2" roll for larger bores. ASW-60 (0.177 mm) is stiffer, for large-diameter pipe. Seal dams with ASWT-1 tape, or ASWT-2 with EZ Peel for faster site work.
Is it suitable for food, pharmaceutical and nuclear pipework?
Yes. Both the paper and the tape are SGS tested for RoHS, halogen and sulphur. The product is non-toxic and biodegradable.
