Aquasol SoluGap is a patented water soluble socket weld spacer ring. It sets the precise, even gap between the pipe end and the socket bottom required for a code-compliant socket weld — then dissolves completely in water after welding. Made of Aquasol's environmentally safe water soluble composite board, it is compatible with any metal and eliminates the guesswork of manual measuring and scribing.

As pipes heat and cool they expand and contract. Socket weld codes (ANSI B31.1, ASME Section III, US Navy/Military) require a minimum 1/16" (1.6mm) gap between the pipe and the socket bottom to absorb this movement. How SoluGap Works

Position

Position the ring by aligning its outer edge with the inner pipe circumference.

Snap in Place

Slide the ring inside the pipe so the tabbed edges fit snugly and snap in place — maintaining the 1/16" (or larger) gap while avoiding compression.

Stay in Place

Once secured, the 3-tab design holds the ring in place even when the socket is sideways or inverted — no slipping during fit-up.

Weld

Tack weld 3-4 times maintaining proper interpass temperature per ASME B31.3. Square up the pipe after the first tack, then complete the weld without exceeding interpass temperature (300°F max).

Dissolve

Introduce hot or cold water to dissolve and remove the ring completely, leaving no residue — or, if preferred, simply leave the spacer in place as no adverse effects result.

This removes the need to stock multiple grades of metal spacers. Unlike metal spacers it will not corrode or break, and it dissolves after welding leaving no foreign metal in the joint.
What temperature can SoluGap withstand?
SoluGap is rated to approximately 400°F. To keep the ring uncharred and ensure it dissolves during hydro-test, do not exceed 300°F interpass temperature while following ASME B31.3. Tack 3-4 times maintaining interpass temperature, square up after the first tack, then complete the weld without exceeding interpass temperature.
