What It Is
Aquasol Water Soluble Paper and Tape are constructed by hand into purge dams for TIG welding of stainless steel and aluminium pipe. The paper forms a low air-permeable barrier that retains noble gases (argon, helium) in the weld zone, and dissolves completely in water during hydro-test with zero residue. Made of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and wooden pulp — 100% biodegradable.
Why Close to the Weld
Traditional purge systems must be placed 10–20 ft from the weld zone, wasting inert gas and adding cost. Aquasol paper dams can be built and placed close to the weld joint, dramatically reducing the volume of argon needed to displace oxygen in the purge chamber — cutting gas consumption and speeding up the purge.

How to Build & Use a Purge Dam
Trace & Impress
Trace the pipe's inner diameter by pressing paper along the pipe edge to create an impression. Fold to form a 90° angle.
Cut
Cut in a circle around the impression, approximately one-third greater than the pipe diameter.
Slit
Slit 1"–2" segments perpendicular to the impression — start at 12 o'clock, then 3, 6, 9 o'clock and around.
Position & Tape
Position the slit paper dam inside the pipe. Secure with Aquasol Water Soluble Tape along the entire circumference.
Activate Tape
Moisten a sponge, squeeze out excess, and lightly dab along the tape to reactivate the adhesive for a low air-permeable seal.
Repeat Opposite Side
Repeat on the opposite side of the pipe to close the purge chamber.
Introduce Gas & Weld
Insert the purge gas needle into the root gap, introduce noble gas, confirm the connection, and carry out welding.
Dissolve
Dissolve the paper and tape by introducing water during hydro-test — leaving zero residue in the pipeline.

The water soluble tape has a controlled-tack adhesive — position and reposition the dam before finalising, then dab with a damp sponge to create a zero air-permeable seal as it dries.
